bag it
When you have an abundance of citrus fruit and a lack of bench space there’s only one solution: bag it.
The ever-so-practical string bag is one of my favourite household items. I usually have a string bag hanging somewhere in the kitchen – on a hook or over a chair – and it holds everything from just-picked citrus fruits to onions, kumera and garlic (these hemp soap bags are great for garlic, ginger or limes).
I hang a string bag off hooks in the bathroom to hold face washers and hand towels (we have a lack of shelving), in the garage to hold the beach toys and in my wardrobe to hold scarves.
The bag above was found in an op-shop but I also have these produce bags and a few of these for my weekly shopping trip.
Do you share my odd love of string bags?
Huge fan of the string bag. I may have had to clear a few out to the op shop. All colours, nana bags and even a beautiful macrame one.
I have a few billums which were given to me by my cousin who lived in PNG for a while – and I love them. I use them as a handbag/nappy bag too as they are super stretchy and carry a surprising amount of stuff.
Haven't commented for ages – but read every post Jodi. Always a favourite place to come.
Sending you love x
I never even knew about my love for string bags until I read your post! It must also be a better way to keep your produce fresh with all that…air circulation(?). Love it!! -Audrey | Brunch at Audrey's
I love string bags! I am lucky to have worked in Papua New Guinea and have ensured I maintain my collection of hand made billum bags. Some are made from coloured wool but my favourites are made from other natural fibres. It is sad to see the popularity of plastic shopping bags grow in Papua New Guinea and young people no longer keen to learn the art of the beautiful billum.
I use to have a white and blue chrochet one when I was a teen. Do you remember them? I keep a look out at op-shops but have not found one again. I think I will have to get some of these bags. Biome is my favourite store I shop for our family – drink bottles, bags, oil of clove etc every christmas.
I just have one, exactly the same as the one in your photo, picked up at an opshop for $1. It's the perfect size for my keys, phone, purse & a nappy & wipes when i'm just popping down to the park or the shops & is big enough to fit a bit of fruit & veges in. I've been keeping an eye out at my regular opshops for more but no such luck. I like your idea of hanging one in the bathroom, ours is tiny & seriously lacking in storage.
I do love a good string bag. I have plans to give each of my boys one to carry their wetsuits, bathers, towels and assorted beach paraphernalia this summer (after spending many years feeling like a packhouse carting their gear up and down the steps to our favourite cove with a baby on my back). The sand falls straight through the open weave – and if you loop the handles over your shoulders you have a lumpy backpack of sorts!
I've been thinking about crocheting some. For about five years.
I go weak at the knees for a string bag. x
I love simple photos of everyday things! This is great 🙂
beautiful bag. i love it.
