phone home

I do like a good chat on the phone. That’s me in the photo, chatting away on a public phone in Hawaii. That dress is still safe and sound in my cupboard. Still as cute as ever (those little dots are embroidered cherries) and perhaps waiting for a little girl who may one day come along.

It’s Hawaii-hot here tonight and I’ve rediscovered a love of paddle pops. Oh they take me back to late afternoons of street cricket, Sunday summer bbqs and running under the sprinkler. Sweet nostalgia.

I think I even referred to paddle pops in a paint store once when the guy asked me what kind of yellow I wanted. “No not lemon, no to buttercup, got any banana paddle pop?” I think they used to be 50c. In a bygone era.

And because this has somehow turned into a post about ice-cream pastimes I’ll leave all you Australian readers with one (hyphenated) word that will no doubt make you smile. Bubble-o-bill.

Do you remember Barney Bananas back in the 70’s and 80’s when they actually had real chunks of banana in them? They were delicious!

I’ve tried to give my little ones banana paddle pops and they don’t like them at all – then I have to finish the melted mess. Oh well!

Love that photo – I think I saw that very same phone in Hawaii…

i love the really creative and onomotopeic (is that a word) names australians come up with for various different food items. and i’m sure that it isn’t limited to just food, but that’s what i’ve noticed so far living with my husband and chatting with aussie friends here in japan.

your son really does look like you. spittin’ image.

I love banana paddle pops – but I also have a weakness for the rainbow ones! The mention of have-a-hearts made me smile, it’s been years since I thought of those. I too remember when they were 50c. Gee I’m sounding old now…

I’m amazed they still make Bubble-o-bills. You got me thinking about icecreams of the 70’s – more my time than yours – and the ones I miss. There was an iconic orange icy pole whose name I’m searching for because it was The one and they stopped making it. Then there was the two-in-one, vanilla choc covered icecream with two sticks so you could share with a friend. Then I remembered another of my faves that was relatively short lived. Again a vanilla icecream centre with raspberry jelly like stuff on the outside which resembled the texture of a raspberry. That then led me to this link, if you haven’t read enough, of some others of that time http://www.toltoys.com/labels/Ice%20Cream.html.
