a small favour…

the first lotus flower I’d seen in real life. I almost fell into the pond whilst taking this photo.

Spending time away from this space gave me the perfect opportunity to put blogging into perspective. Subsequently I’ve been inspired to make a few changes and I’m happy to say that they’re currently in the works.

I’ve never asked you before but I really would like to know…what posts do you enjoy reading? And why do you keep coming back to Che and Fidel? I know leaving comments is both time consuming and tricky (especially if you’re reading this on your phone whilst breastfeeding!) but I would really appreciate what you have to say. Perhaps you might even like to introduce yourself because I’d love to know more about you, too.

Thank YOU, so much.

Hi! I'm Bel from Life at no.2, and I visit each time you post thanks to bloglovin! I few things strike me when I visit, it always feels warm and homely, I'm a huge fan of photography, so I love seeing the images you post. I'm not drawn to one particular topic you write about really, as I said, you've created a warm and friendly place for me to visit and I like that in a blogger x

Hi Jodi, I've been following for a long while now and comment sporadically. I blog over at laluuu (and do that somewhat sporadically too!) My favourite posts are your Practicing Simplicity series (my family lives a fairly simple life and align ourselves with the concept of wabi-sabi) and your seasonal series. I seem to remember you used to post about yoga a bit… I would welcome more posts on the topic. Anyway, glad to have you in the blogosphere and I look forward to more posts. Luna. x

Hi Jodi – I'm Becs, and I recently started a blog (Think Big Live Simply) and have been 'reading you' since Che was little. I love your blog because of the evocative photography, impactful writing and the simple, gentle, beautiful way you live your life (without hiding too much of the reality of life!). I've loved your Simplicity series especially! 🙂

I really like your posts on mindfulness, parenting and simplicity. Don't care much for giveaways or posts about wearing things that have been gifted etc. There is nothing wrong with bloggers making an income from these type of posts but I would rather a disclaimer or simply saying they are sponsored (gifted is an odd choice of words – if you are given a gift, nothing is usually expected in return. In these cases, as we all know the idea is that you promote the products on your blog in exchange for free products – that is how it works, even in the cases where people deny this!). Baby Mac does sponsored posts well – she is upfront and simply says it how it is – which I think is more professional than sort of weaving these details into the text to present some kind of illusion that you simply happened to be wearing this or doing that etc.

Hi Joanna, I'm presuming you're the same "Joanna" that has shared your thoughts on sponsored posts/giveaways previously. Sponsored posts are cash related, gifts are gifts. The blogger can post the details of the product or not – there is no obligation (at least that's been my experience). I am always honest about products in this space and as I have mentioned to you before, I'm all for supporting and promoting small businesses and creatives – because I am both x

Hi Jodi, my feedback was given as constructive criticism. As always, the blogging world can be a bit like high school – if someone dares have a different opinion to the pack, someone else is always ready to jump in! There's lots to like about your blog as I and others have pointed out. The bits I don't like I tend to scroll past. I don't agree with you regarding the no obligation with gifts – I think anyone who works in pr will tell you that the whole reason why people send bloggers gifts is so that they get publicity. And don't gifts have a value ie if you were to buy the things you were gifted, you would have to pay for them out of your own pocket. No problem with you supporting small businesses or yourself – just would prefer honesty at the start of the post. But really, (before anyone jumps in again!) it is totally up to you – but the whole purpose of this post was to ask for feedback, which is of course, up to you whether you go with it or not.

      Reply

Yes, I asked for feedback and I'm grateful for it! I have made a point in the past to put links directly under the photos in regards to items from sponsors (gifted or not) which is, most definitely at the top of the post – I don't write "sponsored" because there is no exchange of money. All I can say is that I have been gifted items that I haven't posted about, even if that was the "hope" of the brand. I work in magazines, too, and there are far more products gifted than what are featured in print. And yes, it is up to me and I have no qualms with the way I go about integrating brands and sponsors into this space. Happy for you to continue reading, ignore the featured products and leave honest, constructive feedback x

Jodi that is exactly what I'm doing right now, reading this on my phone while breast feeding!! Actually, most of my blog reading is like this, so I don't always leave a comment because of the mistakes I tend to make trying to type. I like just about everything you post about, particularly 'finding simplicity' and I can relate to so much of everything else too. Of course I adore your 52 series as well, and disappointed I wasn't able to keep up from my end..x

The kind of posts I like are your Seasonal posts, The Simplicity Series and ones when you share a bit about new places/cafés etc. Because I love the photo essays that come along with that. I also love your photos and would love more posts that have more than 1 photo in it! I love the visual.
I also love the occasional video of Daniel's, always beautiful!

I love that you don't have a lot of giveaways/sponsored stuff. I think the simple line of sponsors down the side really fits well here.

I feel like I should elaborate further. My comment is not meant to sound negative or aimed soley at you. I just mean there are so many bloggers who started off blogging about the simple things, like family and life with children. Now it seems they blog to show off what they have been gifted with etc. Which is all well and good, who wouldn't love some free stuff from time to time! Your blog is one I rely on for simplicity though! I don't feel pressured when I come here to buy this or own that….the blogging world has become so materialistic of late!

Thanks for clarifying. And I agree – blogging is a very different place to what it was 6 years ago when I began. But families grow and so do children and for me, blogging about personal/family issues to a large readership just doesn't sit well.

I'm really pleased that you don't feel pressured to purchase when you come here. But you know what? I put hours upon hours of work into this space and yes, I am so grateful to receive gifts and an income in return. For me, as a writer and (sometimes) a photographer, it's incredibly rewarding to make a career from my craft. I am always grateful for the opportunities that arise but my aim is to do everything with integrity – to find that balance between simplicity and reality, to blog about issues that I'm passionate about and to, hopefully, engage, inform and inspire you, the reader.

I also really appreciate your thoughts x

Hi, I have been reading your blog for about a year now – I check it every day or two I think (now I feel stalky). I love your photography as well, and it is fun when you take pictures of a cafe or an outing. I also love your yoga tips… remember a few posts ago when you said something like "now sit up straight, lift your head to the sky…" I blessed you when I read those words, it helped me get out of a slump.
I love your sponsors list on the side – makes it so easy to find great clothes for boys. I would love to hear more about your son, and the things he does or learns – because my son is younger than him, and it would be great to read about what boys experience. People always write about girls…. but I understand that he is your son, and your lives are your own. But really why your blog is so great, is because it is yours. I appreciate your kindness most of all – you never write when you are angry, you have never written a cruel word, it is such a rare and beautiful trait. Thank you.

By far, the blogs I am most attracted to reading, are the ones that use photographs as well as words to tell their stories. I love to read about day to day life…celebrated within family… and the growing insights into the greater life journey – in terms of spirit – that happen along the way. I enjoy this blog for that reason, Blogging for me is about a big scrapbook of inspiration and sharing. Hello Jodi, It's Liesl here! I've been visiting your gorgeous space for well over three years now. I very rarely comment but I always enjoy what you have to offer here… both your way with words and stunning photography (it is such a calming influence)! Some of your most memorable posts for me was your preparation & birth story of Poet – I took a lot of what you wrote on board so when it was time for me to birth my third child a few months later, I consciously approached it very differently (the actual birth and post-birth) and consquently it was such a positive and a very happy experience for me and I definitely credit some of that to you – so what a good opportunity to pass on my sincerest thank you!! I know change is often needed and it can be a good thing, but please don't change this space too much as I think you have the recipe pretty spot on! 🙂 Best wishes, Liesl x

I had a blog for three years but the email attached to it was hacked into and the whole blog was deleted, so in January I had to start over. When I did, it really made me reconsider my thoughts about blogging and how I approach it. I have changed since I first started blogging and so has how I write, what I post about and what type of blogs I follow. I love yours and come back here often because I feel you are sincere in what you feel and write about. It is very peaceful here, I never feel like you are trying to be something you're not. I love the way you write and I love your photos. I love the whole blog but I especially like your seasonal series…and the simplicity ones. You seem very passionate about both those subjects.

I happened upon your blog through another blog i had been reading that participated in the 52 project. I had been doing the project, but loved that you gave the opportunity to link-up, and explore how others were doing the same thing… then i started reading your practicing simplicity posts – and you won my heart.

I love that reading your blog both reminds me and encourages me to keep life simple and enjoy what and where I am. There are many blogs that draw much attention to things, and I do love reading about good quality things, but I really enjoy reading your practical insights on living a life that is less cluttered by stuff.

I really enjoyed your post about the camera that you use and why you chose it.. I think it was a good mix of both of these. I really enjoy your blog and will keep coming back for more.

Hi Jodi. We have exchanged words on the blogging community and how it is so different from what it used to be. I personally find that if you have a talent for writing, taking photographs and are dynamic enough as a person to provoke in people a change in thought or a change in behaviour… How is it any different to an accountant doing what he does best to make money for his family? I for one love everything you write. When you are doing a sponsored post, it either has nothing to do with me and not up my alley, or you've just helped me make a decision on, say, sunscreen. We are all thinking adults and I don't believe if anyone says they only buy something 'cause Jodi said it was good so I had to'. That's kind of not taking responsibility for your own actions, no? To me, it's simple. You're a mama, you work from home. You pick sponsors according to your needs and maybe sometimes to the perceived needs of your readers. But no one ever twists my arm when I'm adding to cart on a website – I make my own choices!

I'll keep reading, whatever the changes are Jodi.

That's it, right there… A talent dynamic enough to provoke in people a change in thought or a change in behaviour. That's how we can change the world, all of us. And yes you're completely spot on, it IS simple. It's simple give and take. It's only messy out there in the blogging world because people make it messy. To earn a living doing what you love, supporting kindred spirits and receiving something in return (whatever that may be), well it's magic.

I love the look of the blog and the overall style of the posts. When I overhauled my own blog recently, you were one of the places I looked to for inspiration.

I disagree about sponsored posts and mentioning gifts. With all the discussion around at the moment about writing for free, I think it's funny that people have such an issue with things like this. Blogging is something that it's very, very difficult to earn money from and yet it's very, very easy to devote huge amounts of your time and energy to it. I've been blogging for years and of course I've mentioned the few perks that have come my way! If nothing else, it's kind of an honour that someone valued your thoughts enough to share something with you.

Hi Jodi, I'm Lucy, I started reading your blog after moving from Sydney to a country town. Whilst the move has afforded us a lovely old house on a big block, I've found it quite isolating in finding like-minded people and parents who share similar parenting styles/philosophies. I read your blog on Bloglovin on my IPhone during my little boys' naptime. I enjoy your posts about simplifying, gentle parenting and I find beauty in your images. At the risk of sounding pathetic, your blog brings me a sense of company and helps break up my day. I adore being a stay at home Mum but I miss the stimulation of having adult discussion. I think your giveaways are generous and see them as a bit of fun to enter and have a shot at winning something you may not normally spend your money on. I especially like the creative ways you think of people entering (disclaimer: I've won one of your giveaways!) In terms of your posts about products, for me, it's a way of learning about small businesses and products as the nearest shops are an hour away. I'd much rather support a working mum who supports fair trade practices than buy from a large retailer that sells mass produced items. Sometimes it feels like only bloggers read blogs, I just wanted to let you know there's a Mum out there who enjoys your blog and gets a lot out if it as well as the dialogue from your commenters.

    Hi Jodi,
I like visiting your space because I like your design aesthetic. I enjoy looking at your pics and listening to your words on parenting that offer a gentler approach than some of the more consumerist, lairy images presented in society about raising children. I feel like you offer an alternative to that with your posts of food, decoration of children's rooms, clothing etc. I particularly enjoyed your seasonal series and notes from your natropath. I've bought Queen B candles on your recommendation which have been lovely, I use Murchison and Hume in my home and more importantly, I felt reassured by your words about birth and a woman's ability to do it when I was preparing for the birth of my second. It must be hard to keep thinking up material all the time for this blog that is appropriate for what you are trying to present but you seem to be able to keep producing the goods! And yet, you're not smug. I've appreciated posts about trying to save money, and the practicing simplicity posts both because they reflect where I'm at in my own life but also you admit it doesn't always come easily to you. Like other commenters, I appreciate the lack of moaning in your blog, but that doesn't mean it isn't heartening to know that you are also real…I'm usually not a fan of sponsored posts, for me they seem to change the heart of a blog (it becomes somehow more business like, and that dilutes the sense that you are 'talking to a friend' with something to say) but you have such impeccable taste I usually enjoy them nonetheless! Good luck with the changes, and thank you.

Hi Jodi! I'm Steph and have only just recently found your blog. I am originally from Aus but live in Hong Kong currently with my little baby girl and my husband. I sometimes struggle with the enormous differences in raising children here and the different mind sets amongst locals and expats alike. I find your voice to be a calming and inspiring one, and I feel a little stronger in my parenting philosophies after reading your wise words. I love the simplicity posts, but honestly love all that I see here. My thanks to you!

When I was pregnant with my now 15 months old boy I used to come here for encouragement and natural, down to earth – kind of approach. I wanted to be able to trust my body and my instincts in birth and mothering, and that`s what I did, and been trying to do since. You inspired me. Thank you for that. x

Hi Jodi. I'm Steph, a Canadian in her mid-20's who just got married to her best friend two months ago. I currently work in a molecular biology lab but my artistic/creative side has been itching for a bit more freedom. I'm working on developing my technique and skill with watercolour, copics, and photography in the hopes of having an online stationery shop.

I only recently stumbled across your blog through the 52 project and instantly felt at home. Visually, I love the simplicity of your posts – a picture that catches my attention followed by a short block of text. I really enjoy that format (as opposed to photo, text, photo, text, etc) because I'm better able to focus on what the text is saying. And what you write, Jodi, always makes me think about my own life decisions — especially your "Practicing Simplicity" posts. I always appreciate a writer who has the power to do that with their thoughts and words. I love your honesty, straight-forwardness, and your beautiful photography. I guess what I'm trying to say is: great job, and thanks for writing this blog. 🙂

Your photos are stunning and I Was so pleased to find out last week that you don't use an expensive fancy pants camera and that made me realise that normal old me could take a half decent picture if Try hard enough. I love your seasonal series and your posts on simplicity…these have made take more consideration when purchasing gifts for my brood I would really like to read more about Yoga, something I have just started to do. Your posts on motherhood really resonate with me too.

Hi Jodi, I'm Polly, from the UK. A designer of kids books and a blogger of my life, garden, home blah blah… I've been visiting this space for a little while, I love your photography, have similar ethics, I don't have kids myself so don't relate to everything you discuss though of course I design for kids so still have an interest (admittedly sometimes I do skim over a long post on motherhood, it's just something I can't relate to, but that's just me). Another reason I like this space is my partners niece and nephew are growing up in Australia and are similar ages to Poet and Che. I guess seeing your life helps me imagine theirs.

What brings me to your blog again and again is the quality of your posts, rather than specific topics. I appreciate your knack for exploring a large variety of ideas in ways that always feel cohesive because the posts are filtered through your perspective and voice. From the outside, you seem to have created an online space that reflects who you are as well as your evolving interests, so I expect the changes you are planning will be incorporated as seamlessly as your earlier transitions and additions. Your words are immensely appreciated, I tell you! So many blogs are nothing but photos and links to buy STUFF…it gets old to me, personally, and I am much more interested in something someone [you] has to say, along side of the beautiful photos you take. Thank you for sharing everything you share. I will continue to read and enjoy for as long as you continue to share.

Oh goodness, I wanted to make this as brief as possible for you – but you would know by now that short and sweet are not my forte….

    Hi Jodi,

I personally love the space you have grown here and have delighted in watching Ché and Fidel transform for you from a little online family journal space into what I now have come to think of as an inspiring online magazine. Ché and Fidel has it’s own unique flavour, it’s a beautifully designed space, it’s mindful and inspiring. I am so happy for you and think you should be so very proud of yourself for what you have created.

How do I view this space… as a beautiful little nook in the corner of a garden café where I can go sit with a like minded friend and chat to her over a warm cup of chai about things that are so very relevant to raising a family mindfully, trying to live with peace and inspiration through what is sometimes a challenging (albeit always deeply rewarding) path of raising a young family, hear her ideas on what’s inspiring her at the moment in life itself and find out, (because my children need new rain boots), just which one’s her children have worn that she would recommend. I leave the catch up with a warmed heart, a smile on my face and a few new ideas from an inspiring like minded mumma.

I have enjoyed watching this space evolve into a place for your creative musings and I love where it’s going. I am so glad you have a place to publish all your creative talents, unedited, just exactly as you want the world to see them and yourself. Keep letting this space unfold in the direction your heart dreams and I know it will continue to grow in a direction of amazing beauty. I know you always envisaged that the blog would share little about Ché once he grew from his early childhood years, but please do remember to give us just a tiny little glimpse of sweet little Poet every once in a while through these precious early years so I can continue to marvel at just how much that sweet little one that we’ve never as yet had the pleasure of meeting, looks oh so very much like a toddling yesteryear Jodi! (On a personal note, I love the occasional story of back home as well, because it's so therapeutic for my random bouts of homesickness! 🙂 But I can see the blog is evolving away from that and to be honest, just to read your words, whatever they're about gives me a connection to back home – I know I've always told you that, as strange as it may seem… I guess it's like hearing from a friend back home keeps you connected to the place, whatever they're talking about.) 🙂

And in all honesty – the sponsorship of this space is something I’ve not only come to rely on, but also really appreciate. It takes so much ground work off me when there’s something I often need for our family. I have the added benefit of having known you personally and seeing what a genuine and wonderful person you are (which I think anyone who reads this space would also probably glean from you!) so I know you would be conscious of who and what you share in this space and I wholeheartedly enjoy and appreciate your recommendations. I recently heard it said; “there is no shame in the money” and I think that rings so true for sponsored blogging as well, if you do it mindfully, as I trust you do. 'THERESA S' put it into words perfectly in her comment and I agree with everything she says about the fact that we all have our own minds and are our own people making free choices.

    All Blessings xxxx

I've been reading the other comments, and thinking overnight, and I agree that this space has evolved since I first started posting. I wanted to add that one of the things I like about your posts about simplicity, practicality, preferring organic cleaning solutions, the simple gifts at christmas is when you give an insight into the difficulties of implementing them or in having other people accept that as your decision. I think we all struggle to meet our 'ideal' life (whatever that may be) and I like that your posts share that honesty. And my honesty moment … well seeing how other people deal with 'push back' on lifestyle decisions is certainly helpful!!

I constantly have to remind myself of my readership; for safety reasons and because it's just plain sensible to do so. There are everyday things I haven't mentioned on here because they may give away hints as to our location or Che's school etc etc. To be honest, the only thing I miss about blogging to a smaller audience was the very strong sense of community/friendship. But you know what, I think it still exists; it's just different. Blogging has changed drastically and so has the community that keeps it going. It's up to us as bloggers to leave comments, reply to comments, link to other blogs etc – THAT is community and it's still very possible to keep it strong x

I love how most of your posts make me feel like slowing down, assessing and reassessing my family's rhythm, aspiring to a simpler, more beautiful and meaningful life. These probably sound like empty words, but I can assure you they're not; you truly are an inspiration as far as taking the time to live a considerate life goes and I always come back for the peaceful vibe you send out. In an era where technology seems to alienate people from one another, I have to say I'm very grateful that there are people like you out there who actually use this tool for actually bringing people together. And to answer your question, my favourite posts are those in which you reflect upon practising simplicity, as well as the photos of your beautiful children. Affectionately, Ioana

You are honestly one of my role models and I sincerely hope we will be able to meet one day. For now I will continue enjoying your posts and supporting you as much as I can. As I blogger I know how tiresome it can be to wonder whether my blog is being read or even enjoyed. There are so many silent, shy readers and it is always nice to know that they exist. Since you mentioned this, I will be commenting more and letting you know that there is one less silent reader out there.
Endless love your way. Thank you for being you.

I originally came across your blog threw The Littlest. I find your pictures beautiful, and you have a way with words…If there is something that I would add onto your space it is more depth..it often feels quite impersonal. I understand it is very tricky when the kids get older and putting honest, difficult things out into the world. but sometimes this space feels a bit superficial..beautiful, calm and serene yes but not completely believable..I know myself that with two young girls, a hubby that works away about half the year, that even with all the yoga I do and teach life is still crazy, busy and sometimes even hard..I really enjoy reading from people that can stay honest about that, have a conversation about that while still being positive and serene… thank you for giving your readers the chance to peep in Jodi.. I know it is never easy to open yourself up to changes or criticism and I respect you greatly for this.

      Sara, hi

Thanks so much for your input. You're right; I don't like to divulge everything in this space because I need to be very wary of what I give away.

When I started this blog 6 years ago I treated it like a gratitude journal; something to remind me of the good in my life. I think I am honest in this space, I talk about being tired and overwhelmed and challenged but I really don't feel the need to expand on it anymore than that. I don't like reading posts that whinge and moan and hence I don't want to write them, either. Just last week I shared how difficult this year has been for me – http://cheandfidel.blogspot.com/2013/11/eighteen-practicing-simplicity.html – and if that's not honest I don't know what is.

I'll continue to write about the good and document the beauty but remember; you can't have calm without the chaos 😉 x

I came here from another blog… Not sure which one? Perhaps Wild & Grizzly… Love your photos of children. But, I especially love your way of simple living.

I can't help coming here when I need some calm, beauty and earthing. I love reading your news and it help me to appreciate a lot of things I may have previously missed. As well as watching Che grow (as Freddie is) and your family evolving. Sometimes I leave it for ages (like now) and then have a whole hour of gentle enjoyable reading. Much nicer than a book (could you write one do you think?) x
