6/52

“A portrait of my daughter, once a week, every week, in 2014.”

Poet: Girl! When she’s unamused she pokes her tongue into her cheek.

She is getting harder to photograph, simply because she’s cottoned on to the fact that getting “the shot” is important to me. She will look straight down the lens and then look (or run) away a millisecond before the shutter clicks. Her timing is both impeccable and downright cheeky.

………………………………………………………………………………………………………….

One of the best things about looking through all your portraits is gaining inspiration for new perspectives. My favourite portraits from 5/52 were chosen because they made me think about where I stand when I’m taking photos.
Elle is playing catch-up but I love how her three portraits of Audrey compliment each other / beautiful colours and lines in Amy’s photos / a traditional shot of father and son – oh so beautiful! / I love these expressions and gestures / Auggie catches the sun – gorgeous boy.

Oh thank you for Jodi! I draw so much inspiration from your photos, you constantly have me thinking about where I am taking my photos. Much love for the coming week, always thinking of you all during these weeks. If only we lived closer we could compare Dadda free (and somewhat lonely) days and nights xxxx

it makes me sad to check in on your sweet family and not see che up there, it feels like something is missing. in an outside world that is already so girl driven this only seems to enforce the idea that girls are more interesting then boys. as a mother of three boys, it makes me sad to see that portrayed here. i know that is not your intention, but with all the advertising going on in this space it does feel a bit like that looking in from the outside. i am sure i am more sensitive to the issue then most. jodi, i write this with deepest love and respect for you.

daniel…how crazy exciting for you guys. you will survive just fine i have no doubt…village or not.

your world is just as beautiful as it ever was. so much growth in your wise old soul.

    xx

      Kristi, hi

Che's absence from this space has nothing to do with the fact that he is a boy. It has everything to do with the fact that he has outgrown this space and I don't feel comfortable sharing his portrait here anymore. I feel like I have made a good decision and it's one that I wholeheartedly believe in. I place everything on this blog with the best of intentions but I also know that I cannot control the subjectivity of my reader, you included.

As for "all the advertising going on in this space" – well, I can only be grateful to the creatives and brands I get to work with. Because as I open this space to their work I am supporting their endeavours and they are supporting me – as a mother that works from home, as a writer and photographer.

Good morning Jodi, I love your photos as always…and Poet's outfits are always gorgeous.

I always feel like I ask you questions…but just briefly could you tell me a few reasons why you purchased a Canon 6D? I am looking to upgrade from a more basic Canon and would love to get some thoughts from you. Also, I normally shoot with a 50mm lens, it there much difference in the 40mm? Any thoughts would be much appreciated, I know you are a busy lady! x

Daniel is shooting the tv series on our 5d mkiii so I was left without a camera (he also took all our lenses). I needed a good camera for some professional work I've got coming up but it seemed silly to purchased another mkiii if I only needed it for 3months. Daniel does all the research around here and he's convinced that the camera (not video) component of the 6D is just the same as the mkiii (with a good $1500 difference in price).

So….we decided it was best for me to buy the 6d and yes, I really like it. It's much lighter than the mkiii so I'm more likely to carry it with me during the day. As for the 40mm 2.8 – I got it because it's really reasonable and because we don't already own one (I really like the 50mm 1.8 but D took it with him).

So yes, I highly recommend the 6D! x

    Hi Jodstar!
I know exactly how feel about capturing Poet, I feel the same about capturing Noah. It is getting more and more difficult, 'Mum, I have better things to do'.
Gorgeous capture of Poet, and I love that every image you take of her is a visual of her personality. x

    Hi Jodi,
Another gorgeous shot of Poet! I love that a glimpse of her personality shines through in each photo! My Ruby has always been tricky to photograph and I've had to be extra creative in my endeavours to photograph her. Lately though, at times she has actually asked me to take a photograph of her and is interested to see it afterwards!! Of course I'm loving this and the fact that she is showing some sort of interest in my photography. Have a great week! x

Oh dear, she sounds like my son. He's cottoned on to the fact I'm after something specific when he spies my camera, so he'll automatically stop doing whatever it was he was doing that I wanted to capture so much. Cheeky little monkeys!!! x

Hey Jodi, just have to put my two cents worth in and say I love this space. You explained really well why you little man is not in the series a while ago and I love that you respect him and his wishes. There comes a time when it turns into their story and not ours. So I don't talk much about our son's start in life- it has become his story. Thanks for this project/ series- just love it x

Well, if even an accomplished photographer like you struggles to get pics of your kids, I feel much better about the fact that my daughter is a blur in almost every shot i take (regardless of whether I use my phone in quick moments or get my proper camera out, which I really should do more often). She has been a nightmare to photograph since she was about 18mths. She is simply never still. The comment above about hummingbirds seems very apt to me.

I am struggling to get Iris to stay still enough to photograph under theses grey clouds, everything just becomes a fuzzy blur. It's funny how their awareness suddenly can grow and change Xx
