“A portrait of my youngest children, once a week, every week, in 2016.”
Poet: oh, those lips (ISO 200, f2.8, 1/640)
Poet is getting harder to photograph (I find this quite common around the age of 4) so capturing her unaware is my best bet, in most cases.
Percy: happy as a clam in the rock pool at sunset. HIs all-in-one rashie is from The Bathers Co. and it makes beach time so much easier! (ISO200, f2.8, 1/2500).

Oh doesn't Percy look like he's adoring playing in the rock pool, what a treat to spend the summer at the beach!
Poet looks twice her age in this portrait. Thank you for putting your camera settings, it's helping me as I stumble around with manual modes.
A summer in stripes is a summer well spent 🙂 I'm so pleased you're doing this again this year, Jodi. I put down my camera for work in winter last year and have loved picking it up again at home.
I think I might have to get Elroy one of those rashies, so much easier and no exposed tummy! Jodi can I ask you a photography question, I think we have the same camera and lens (cannon 5d mkiii and 50mm 1.4 lens) and I am still working hard to get manual settings right, but mostly I have a lot of trouble with focus and clarity, so many come out blurry or weak. Your photographs always look so clear and crisp. I'm just not sure if I have the right focus settings on. I try to edit them in lightroom but it doesn't always work. Thank you for your time. Catherine xx
The less sunscreen you have to put on a baby the better, I say!
Now, you might want to check your focal point on the camera. The mkiii has 61 focus points but I only have it set to one – spot AF – …so when I focus I aim it on the face and then I'll recompose to get the frame that I want. Watch this tutorial to get a better idea – https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=0i2_CHhp9Q4
Also, always shoot on f2.8 or above when photographing Elroy. Babies move so quickly….any lower aperture is almost guaranteed to blur x
Thanks Jodi for your help, I am pretty sure I must have watched that video, or another similar one before, because my camera is already set up like that. It must be me still not quite getting the iso, focus and shutter speeds just right. I could be quite shakey in the hands too as I have Graves disease and that is a part of it, so I should remember to compensate for that. I find it so frustrating when I think I've captured it right, and it looks right on the camera screen, only to find that it isn't. xx
Beautiful photos x x
Poet is your Mini Me in this portrait!
I have the same problem taking a picture of my almost 5 year old, it's like being on a mission!
Beautiful children, beautiful stripes, beautiful pictures! 🙂
I want to be that young again, splashing about in a rockpool and exploring… ahhhhh – the innocence of youth!
That Percy has some serious spunk. What a little cool cat!
