“A portrait of my children, once a week, every week, in 2013.”
Che: Playing battleships on the pirate ship
Poet: Rouge cheeks and a sad pout;  she’s been feverish and miserable for a few days now. Rugged up in her Tibetan quilted jacket by Kokonor and bonnet by Dover & Madden.

I was quite pleased when I placed these photos together and noticed a lovely “looking down” diptych.
It’s been a quiet week around here. Daniel was away for four nights so I delved into solo parenting – not my forte. I have realised over the past few months that my solo-parenting weeks are dictated by my attitude; if I dread them they will indeed turn to mud. This week I took it slow, didn’t try to do too much, planned easy dinners and went to bed early – it made all the difference. Big respect to all the single parents out there – you are admired!

Poor Poet – I hope she feels better soon. Love her bonnet.
What a smashing pirate ship – Che looks lost in his own little Word of play – magical x

My respect for single parents was raised through the roof when my number one
was away for 5 weeks in South Africa several years ago. Longest 5 weeks ever.

hope Poet feels better soon and I too like the glances of your diptych. xxoo

Lovely portraits as usual. Solo parenting certainly is hard work – my partner works in the mining industry and travels often. With four boys and no family support it can be a very tough gig, especially when a child, or indeed yourself, is sick. This Winter is looking like a particularly bad year for colds and flu – homemade chicken soup has been on the menu often around here. Get well soon Poet. xx

get well soon Poet…i can feel those burny-cheeks just looking at the photo. poor poppet. how i smiled though too as i have a jacket like yours! it belonged to my mum and i love the cosy feel of it's quilt around me.

love both these gazes Jodi. your sense of a quiet week is coming through in the beautiful images. glad you made it through and like you say respect is due to all the parents who go it alone every week. xx

Oh I understand it all about solo parenting, and it's not my forte either, as you say. Due to work schedules, this happens a lot around here and I never get used to it.
Big admiration and a big hug to all single parents, that is for sure. 😉

oh such dreamy images this week Jodi! I think I'd fail solo parenting too, but it seems your plan of taking it slow and steady was the trick! wishing you wonderful, restful, peaceful Sunday xx

Solo parenting is so so tough. And throw a sick child into the mix and it's almost enough to break me! Hope this week is a little easier on you and Poet recovers quickly. X

I have been both. A solos parent with my first and now a partnered parent with my second. Both have the most amazing rewards. With solo parenting the best thing to do is to slow down and enjoy the moment.

I think you're spot on with the attitude thing. It seems most days unfold that way when you start them with the wrong head space. Good on you for taking care of yourself. Poor Poet and her Wintry ails….hope she's on the mend soon. And CHe seems ever the thinker. Hope your week is lovely 🙂 x

That's the only way I can survive weeks without Hubby. Slowly, mindfully, ensuring sleep and rest.

    Gorgeous pics, as always 🙂

Sole parents are amazing! I had to solo parent for 7 whole months as my husband moved overseas before we could join him. I was almost completely insane by the end of it. Luckily I have an amazing mum and friends who supported me through it, and hubby travelled back for weekends quite often too. But it was HARD. So HARD. I like your attitude to it.

Beautiful photos, as always. I've been meaning to tell you – your "Story of a Home" was so beautifully realized and explained. Thank you for sharing it so well with us all. I have passed it on to my friends here in California who have also found lovely reason in it. Rather than viewing the dirty dishes, miscellaneous bread crumbs, tea-stained mugs, and disarranged couch pillows as ugly now, we can see them as sure signs of constant hospitality. I'm indebted to you for that perfect perspective of house imperfections, which make a home. 🙂

My husband is a driller on an oil rig (it's just his job, nothing more), so he's away for weeks at a time. I find just what you say to be true — that my attitude, state of mind, state of rest, dictate my days with our Maile. Hugs to you!
